    Join us on Wednesday, March 27th from 5 pm to 6:30 pm at the Nature Discovery Center. The workshop will consist of a supply pickup, hands-on presentation, and Q&A session with Galveston Bay Foundation staff. The presentation will discuss water conservation tools like Water My Yard, the environmental benefits of reducing freshwater usage and collecting rainwater, as well as proper rain barrel preparation, installation instructions and tips. Show up early or stick around after the event to enjoy walking through the beautiful botanic gardens and trails.

    Ranch Management University (RMU) is an intensive 4-day event that targets new or inexperienced ranchers and landowners and covers the fundamentals of soils and soil fertility, forage establishment, pasture management, and utilization by livestock. Basic livestock management practices such as castrating, vaccinating, and de-horning calves are demonstrated. Grazing management, stocking rate, and body condition scoring are also highlighted. Additionally, several wildlife management topics are covered for those interested in managing white-tailed deer, turkey, quail, feral hogs, and farm ponds.

    Approximately one-half the workshop involves lectures and discussion, with the remainder consisting of the field demonstrations including soil sampling, hay sampling, calibrating sprayers, livestock handling, feral hog management, and pond management. Various forage species, including bermudagrass, small grains, annual ryegrass, and clovers are studied by workshop attendees.

  3. Wildlife Tax Valuation Workshop

    At the workshop, biologists will discuss the guidelines of the wildlife tax valuation, habitat management activities, wildlife management plan development, filling out required forms and applicable management practices. There will also be tips on implementing management practices such as brush management, water development, and supplemental feeding to benefit wildlife. Following the last presentation, biologists will be on hand to provide management recommendations and help develop wildlife management plans for individuals attending in person. Who should attend?     Galveston Bay Foundation’s Rain Barrel Program works in partnership with Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages to conserve water and reduce stormwater runoff, pollution, and bacteria entering Galveston Bay.
