    At this monthly event in the beautiful setting of the ever-changing Texas Botanical Gardens, there is always coffee, fresh baked goods, and good conversation. Come meet new people and get involved in our community! Even though the title is “Ladies Meet and Greet,” menfolk are welcome, too. No registration is required.

    At this event, Dr. Jon Lohse of the Texas Archeological Society will present an introduction to archeology, identifying sites, and hands-on training with the assistance of Chris Meis and Jimmy Barrera. Participants will also be involved in an actual, active archeological dig!  Starting Friday evening March 24, 2023, and continuing all day on Saturday, March 25, 2023, classroom sessions for this academy will be held at the Legacy Plaza Pavilion, in downtown Goldthwaite, Texas. The hands-on field component will be held Sunday, March 26, 2023, just outside Goldthwaite at the Clovis Field site on the Barnett Ranch. The cost to attend the event includes a $40 TAS membership fee and $100 registration fee. More information can be found here.

    Come to the Texas Botanical Gardens immediately after the Chamber of Commerce’s Parade of Lights to sample the best hot cocoa in Texas! When all of the tastings is done, grab a ballot and declare your favorite! The winner will be announced in the newspaper the following week.

    While you’re at the gardens, take a walk through and find all of the hiding gnomes, purchase a Luminary and place it in the gardens in the name of someone you love, or donate a year-end gift to the gardens with the Giving Tree in the Welcome Center.

  4. Archaeology in Mills and Surrounding Counties

    A multi-layered and hands-on presentation, Archaeology in Mills and Surrounding Counties will be presented by the Texas Archaeological Society (TAS) Steward for Mills County, Del Barnett and several TAS archaeologists. At the presentation, attendees will witness a flint knapping demonstration, hear about the artifacts and exciting new discoveries in Mills, Lampasas, and San Saba counties, present their own personal artifacts for evaluation and dating to the TAS archaeologists, learn a bit about an actual dig. On Sunday, attendees are invited to participate in one of the digs in Mills County.

    Martha Carson, a renowned artist, will teach art camp to elementary-aged children in the Texas Botanical Gardens from July 18-20. She is basing her camp on the Keri Smith book, “How to Be an Explorer of the World, Portable Life Museum” and will guide the students to express the world around them in art. No registration is required.

    The Penatukah Comanches, as one of our prominent prehistoric peoples, had trails all over Central Texas denoted by Marker Trees, artifacts, and lore. The Mills County Historical Museum and the Texas Botanical Gardens and Native American Interpretive Center have partnered to bring the Penatukah Trail Story Boards to Goldthwaite during the month of July 2022. The event will be open July 1-31 from 10 am-2 pm.
