Vermillion Farms was founded over 15 years ago to tackle the issues of food scarcity and obesity within the local community. The farm and greenhouse, located in Coupland, TX, is dedicated to sustainable agriculture, with a focus on climate, conservation, efficiency, distance, and employee wellbeing. Vermillion Farms establishes innovative farm practices based on the world we live in today, aiming to create the healthiest produce possible, using the least amount of resources, and creating the least amount of waste.
Project Description & History
Vermillion Farms utilizes a 4,300 sq ft environmentally controlled greenhouse with 200 aeroponic towers. The vertical towers require 95% less water to grow produce and can support over 10 times the amount of food that hydroponic, aquaponic, or horizontal systems can sustain. These unique aeroponic towers allow Vermillion Farms to use less land, producing 10 acres worth of food in just a 0.1-acre greenhouse. Vermillion Farms does not use herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides. Additionally, methods such as sustainable irrigation, recycled water in cooling walls for temperature regulation, rainwater collection, and even native predator insects and pollinators are utilized. Vermillion Farms serves local customers, which allows for reduced emissions compared to larger commercial growers.
When Vermillion Farms first explored vertical farming practices as an answer to issues surrounding food supply, they soon realized that these methods relied heavily on artificial lighting and electricity usage. Aeroponic towers were the perfect alternative, using natural lighting to grow produce year-round, reducing overall electric needs. The first year of operation has been a great success, with plans to expand in the coming years.
Community Impact
Vermillion Farms’ unique take on sustainable agriculture provides Texans with high-quality organic produce. With over 2,500 people positively impacted in just the first year, the continued expansion of this project will continue to provide more Texans with sustainable farm-to-table produce. In addition to reducing energy costs and implementing ecosystem services, Vermillion Farms creates local jobs. Two jobs are created for every greenhouse that is built, and one for every farmer’s market that the company attends. Vermillion Farms is one of few organizations that is able to grow quality produce year-round, providing more Texans with reliable fresh, local, and sustainable produce.
