Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) is a grassroots, nonprofit leadership organization dedicated to educating the local community about litter abatement, recycling, and urban beautification in order to help preserve the health and prosperity of the city of Irving. KIB is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and Keep Texas Beautiful. The goals of Keep Irving Beautiful are to reach out to leaders across all aspects of Irving – government, business, civic and church organizations, schools, and neighborhoods. All residents of Irving are a vital part of the program’s success.
Project Description & History
In 2022, Keep Irving Beautiful received funding to conduct community cleanups along the Trinity River as a result of project matching through the Texas Water Action Collaborative (TxWAC). Led by Texan by Nature, TxWAC is a coalition of industry, nonprofit, and governmental organizations established in 2021 to increase investments in efforts that yield positive returns for Texas’ water resources.
Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages donated $5,000 to Keep Irving Beautiful, which went towards the purchase of supplies for cleanups during 2022-23, uplifting their mission to facilitate litter abatement around the Trinity River.
Keep Irving Beautiful has been conducting community cleanups since 1992 through their annual Trash Bash event. Volunteers target both land and waterways during cleanup events, utilizing kayaks and canoes to remove litter directly from the river, and preventing litter on land from entering the waterway. During KIB’s 2023 Trash Bash, 428 volunteers contributed 1,284 hours and removed 1,680 pounds of trash and 660 pounds of recyclable materials from the Trinity River waterway and surrounding areas, in addition to collecting 810 pounds of food for a local pantry.
Keep Irving Beautiful captures the following metrics so that they are able to clearly articulate the impact of their program to their constituents and funders:
Amount and weight of trash and recyclables removed during cleanup events
Number of volunteers contributing to program efforts
Number of people impacted by the project
