I-20 Wildlife Preserve

Location: Midland, Texas

Donated to the City of Midland in the 1960’s, the 87-acre urban playa preserve was maintained by local volunteers and naturalists for decades until a master plan was developed in 2006 for the construction of a nature center and long-term conservation and study of the site. The I-20 Wildlife Preserve and Jenna Welch Nature Study Center was founded in 2007 to ensure the conservation, restoration, education, research and outdoor enjoyment of Midland’s urban playa for present and future generations.

The I-20 Wildlife Preserve offers walking trails, boardwalks, a butterfly garden, a hawk observation deck, and birdwatching blinds. Additionally, though construction of the Jenna Welch Nature Study Center facility is in the planning stages, the Center already collaborates with local schools to develop environmental education curricula and hosts field trips for students of all ages.
