Botanical Research Institute of Texas

Location: Fort Worth, Texas

The Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) is a global, scientific research institute and learning center and the only independent, botanical research organization in the U.S. to provide accessible resources. BRIT was incorporated in 1987 to house the Southern Methodist University herbarium, growing the collection in the following decades from 450,000 specimens to over 1.47 million – making BRIT’s herbarium the ninth largest in the nation. BRIT’s mission is to conserve natural heritage by deepening knowledge of the plant world and increasing public understanding of the value of plant life.

BRIT seeks to discover new species, as well as research plant life for agricultural, economic, environmental, medical, and social benefit. It offers a world-class collection of plants and books; lectures, workshops, programs and publications; and is distinguished by an educated staff committed to conserving our natural heritage through research, discoveries and education.
