Sustainable U with Water Is Alive and John Bunker Sands Wetlands

October 17, 2022

Free

Water Is Alive managed the first of its kind demonstration of the Trinity River Bioremediation Project from June 15th to July 27th of 2022. 21,000 gallons of fermented onion biostimulant was added to the water at John Bunker Sands Wetlands. John Bunker Sands Wetlands is a 2000-acre constructed wetland and the water filter for the North Texas Municipal Water District. John DeFillipo, Director of the John Bunker Sands Wetlands Center, will be joining Virginia Kilgore from Water Is Alive at the Dallas Colleges ‘Sustainable U’ studios to talk about how the John Bunker Sands Wetlands help clean water from Trinity River, the drinking water of half of all Texans.

Virginia from Water Is Alive will also be giving a demonstration of how to make a DIY biostimulant from your kitchen food wastes. You can improve the soil biome in your yard and garden by fermenting your compostables in an airtight bucket then burying the fermented organics in the ground. A thriving soil biome helps break down nutrients in the soil so plants can metabolize them, thus improving plant resilience while reducing the nutrient levels in runoff water. This will result in healthier waterways, improved water quality and more nutritional value in food, all while recycling food wastes!

This October edition of Sustainable U will be pre-recorded and sent to your email address by registering for the Dallas Colleges Sustainability newsletter:

Sustainable U webinars are hosted by the Dallas College Office of Sustainability Outreach and Initiatives to educate and empower our communities on sustainability practices. The United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals are our primary teaching and learning framework. Sustainable U webinars showcase local and national speakers who address timely topics that are relevant to the citizens of North Texas.
