Sink Your Shucks Community Oyster Reef Restoration Event

May 11 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

Join the Harte Research Institute’s Sink Your Shucks program at Goose Island State Park to help rebuild an oyster reef in Aransas Bay! Volunteers will work stations to bag recycled oyster shell then place them into the bay. Participants of all ages are welcome, but shell can be heavy and we will be near open water so close parental guidance is required. Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes (wading boots are perfect), clothes that can get wet and dirty, sunscreen, and a hat. Work gloves and shovels will be provided as well as drinks and snacks.

Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt for signing up while supplies last.

The Sink Your Shucks program, founded in 2009, is the first in Texas to reclaim more than 1,000,000 pounds of shucked oyster shells from local restaurants and wholesalers and return them to our local waters, providing substrate to form new reefs and habitat for fish, crabs, and other organisms.
