Victoria Winter Hummingbirds: From 14 to 160 by Dr. Brent Ortego
Dr. Brent Ortego, a retired biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, spent 34 years working on nongame and endangered species issues in Texas. He began banding birds under a permit held by Dr. Ross Dawkins from San Angelo in 1995. One of his projects was banding hummingbirds at his home in Victoria County from 1995 – 2010. During the first winter, he banded 14 hummingbirds, which eventually led to a peak wintering population of 160 birds. During his presentation to BAS, Dr. Ortego will discuss these amazing birds, and how that remarkable increase of Victoria winter hummingbirds occurred. Approved for AAMN AT hours.
